Ornithological Section
The Perthshire Society of Natural Science was founded in 1867 as the naturalists of Perth decided they should have an association for the mutual benefit of all to work together and assist each other. One of their principle aims was also to form a collection of the flora and fauna of Perthshire. Later, individual Sections evolved to match the general development from generalist to specialist interests. While we no longer seek to collect the specimens for museum displays, our principle aim remains to encourage members in all aspects of the enjoyment of bird life. To this end we meet during the winter for informative talks and in summer for outings
In the lecture series, we try to provide a mix of professionals speaking about their special subject, and amateurs who have a particular interest or who have travelled and studied a foreign avian population. See the link to our current programme.
While it is true that the individual can often see and hear more when alone and sitting quietly, it is also the case that sympathetic companions can help to spot a bird that might otherwise be missed. Our 3 or 4 walks a year are usually in small groups when the beginner and the expert can compare notes and help each other.
Twice a year we compile a Bulletin which reports sightings of birds, and also small mammals, amphibians etc, contributed by members. This is a useful source of information to show the great number of species that we could look out for in Perthshire.
New members are welcome to join us at any time, notably at our 7.30pm Wednesday evening meetings in Perth Museum.
